Lots and Lots of Walking Later...
Hehe, so it's been a great two days with Dad so far. Don't have a whole lot of time... Yesterday I met Dad at the airport after work (ditching a meeting in the process, but I warned them that I'd be taking off early and that's what they get for scheduling a meeting half an hour before I leave ^_^) and we got his stuff back here to my place. Then we headed to Old Town Alexandria and had supper at Bertucci's, which has some really awesome brick oven pizzas (and the rest of the food is delicious, too :) After that we headed down to the waterfront for awhile and came across a guy playing a glass harp, which was reallysuper niftykeen. If you've ever gotten your fingers wet and rubbed them around the edge of a wine glass to make it ring, or used a meditation bowl, then you've got the basic idea. Now take about 20-30 different sized glasses, strap them down to a table with rubber bands, fill them with juuuuust the right amount of water to make them ring at the proper pitches, and you've got yourself a glass harp. And he was good at it--it was awesome watching him play, doing harmonies and everything! He chatted with us between playing, and he was very interesting to listen to; he brought up some topics that sounded like they bordered on conspiracy theory when it comes to creationism, so it looks like I've got some research ahead of me. (Hint: Google "pollonium granite core age earth" or "noah's ark kurds turks." Should make for some interesting reading, though I suspect I'm going to need several grains of salt ;)
Anyway, time's running short so I'll just summarize what we did today:
Ate breakfast (around noon) at the Old Post Office Pavilion
Walked over to the half-off ticket place and got a listing of shows and got details on the free performances at the Kennedy Arts Center. Sent sister an e-postcard--check your mail, Ivy!
Went up to the new Science Museum on 6th and E street. Learned a bit more about DNA/genetics and dark matter and global warming. I'm so loving the fact that I'm a geek ^_^
Headed over to Ollie's Trolley for a "snack" of strawberry shake and tuna salad sandwich (and if you've never been shaken by a strawberry, I highly recommend it O;)
Walked along the National Mall and then past the White House, then up to Farragut West. Got a mini-map of DC since my knowledge of the area doesn't really cover anything farther west, and hiked over to Foggy Bottom where we caught a shuttle to the Kennedy Center.
Listened to the National Symphonic Orchestra's free performance.
Caught the shuttle back to the Metro and headed to Pentagon City with hopes of catching some Irish music at Siné, but alas, not this night. So we ate at Le Creperie instead (man, crepes are awesome--so versatile!)
Picked up a copy Fahrenheit 9/11 because Dad hasn't seen it yet, and then we headed home and now we're going to watch it so that's it for now!
