Zeno's Arrow
Aug. 13th, 2007 11:55 amThere's a paradox that if you fire an arrow through the air, then for every instant in time, the arrow is at rest, and yet it still travels to its destination over a period of time, thus implying that if you take and add up a bunch of instances of something at rest, it can result in movement. This has largely been resolved by saying that it is in fact not true that the arrow can be said to be at rest at a given instant in time. Even though its change in position for that instant may be zero because no time passes--and therefore it appears to be at rest--it still has momentum.
Life tends to be like that as well; even if things don't seem to be moving at a particular time, if you've given yourself momentum, it'll carry you through.
