This weekend has been fantastic for me. Saw lots of movies ^_^ Went to Kung Fu Hustle on Friday night. It was all right but I'd probably appreciate it more if I saw it again. Or maybe not; it's a very silly movie ;) It does have some pretty decent action/fight sequences, but the horribly bad CG kept making me cringe. I don't think I actually whimpered, but I was tempted to.
I spent most of Saturday with Emerald, beginning with us going to see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy with the Northern Virginia Firefly Meetup group. For whatever reason, I liked it a whole lot more the second time than I did the first time. The first time I kept getting irritated or just plain frustrated with the plot differences and the lines that I wanted so badly for them to include, but that were dropped (e.g. Arthur talking about finding the plans for the demolition, Arthur ranting about the things he's going to do to Prosser, the Guide's description of the myriad uses of a towel--though Ford did a good job of illustrating many of them--and so on.) Also I didn't really care for what they'd done with Zaphod's character; in the books he seems to have at least a semblance of smarts, but in the movie, well, he did a good job of impersonating some other President that I could think of...
But the second time around, that expectation wasn't there and so I could just enjoy the wacky fun that was there instead of trying to figure out where the wacky fun that I had expected had gone off to.
And there was a preview for a new Tim Burton film, Corpse Bride, done in what looks to be CG, but adopting a similar style to Nightmare Before Christmas (long gangly characters, big round eyes, dark/grey scenes, you know what I'm talking about). I loved Nightmare too much not to want to go see it; I think that Burton has yet to really leave me feeling disappointed with his work (and yes, that includes Frankenweenie).
After that we had lunch at Ruby Tuesday's with most of the Meetup group and talked about the movie and of course the upcoming Firefly movie, Serenity, speculating and ruminating and other tings.
Then Emerald and I came back to my place for a bit of R&R before getting ready for the UofM's midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. We ended up watching The Dark Crystal because she had never seen it before. Then I got my computer case blacklight working and demonstrated some UV-reactive poi spinning for her. That was awesome and it looks like an actual blacklight will probably have to be on my list of Things-To-Buy-In-The-Near-Future. Mmmm, glowing spinning goodness. I also used the glowsticks I ordered with them, which was awesome. We got some pictures, but most of them are too dim to really appreciate. There is one where I got a nice blue arc all the way from the top of the frame to the bottom, and that is now my desktop background. I may end up making a small icon for poi-related posts, but we'll see. So between that and... other things O:) we got ready and headed out just before 11.
I love Rocky Horror just for the dressing up aspect. Emerald wore a black velvet corset with sparkly rhinestones, a black skirt, and black sandles also with sparklies. I wore black. Black shoes, black leather pants, and black leather vest. Yeah, we were color coordinated.
Ended up getting there at about 11:40, got in and saved seats for some friends of mine who showed up just as the pre-show was beginning and then, of course, was the movie itself. And a good time was had by all.
Came back home and we crashed around 4 or so after what started out as me enjoying her corset (mmmm, velvet...) escalated into something a little more involved.
Today the sleep deprivation is taking its toll and I feel icky, but that didn't stop me from running some necessary errands and checking out the online game Second Life. I'm not sure whether I like it yet or not, but it's a one-time fee of $10 to be able to explore a vast and visually stunning land, so I'll probably go ahead and get it (I'm doing the 7 day trial right now). I've already got enough stuff going on right now that I probably won't be putting a whole lot of time into it, but I'll probably tinker a bit with building my own stuff.
So despite the fact that I'm feeling a bit under the weather, it's been a really great weekend :)
Now it's naptime, to be followed by doing something that doesn't require much effort. Possibly Final Fantasy...
