Animated Icon Tutorial: How to Juggle Geese

I made it using a program called "The GIMP" (it stands for Graphical Image Manipulation Program and it's freeware, but more-or-less as powerful as Adobe's Photoshop). Basically I drew the juggler and the geese as a single 400x100 pixel image, and then selected a 100x100 square (because that's the LJ limit). I copied that to a fresh layer in a new image, and added a text layer above it (adjusting the opacity accordingly--e.g. for the first frame I set the opacity at about 33% for the text). Then I went back to the original, moved the selection box up about 25 pixels, and copied that shot over to a new layer in the second image. Copied the first layer of text and increased the opacity to about 50% so it would start to give the fade-in effect. Repeat, moving the selection box, copy to new layer, create new text layer with proper opacity... In other words, I did it frame by frame ;) When you export an image with layers to a .gif file in The GIMP, it prompts you to either collapse all the layers or save it as an animation, with each layer as one frame.

So that's basically how I did it--hopefully that wasn't more than you ever wanted to know ;) (and if you want more detail, I'd be happy to oblige O:)
