As many of you know (and many of you don't... I've kept it more quiet this time around than in the past, for whatever reason...) I have been looking for a job lately. The contract that Battelle had got reawarded to a different contractor, and since I was with them as a subcontractor, they let me (and the other subcontractor) go when money started getting tight.

So I've been job hunting for the past three weeks. It's been a bit of an adventure, but it's done now and I've ended up accepting a position with Johns-Hopkins University's Applied Physics Lab. I start Monday, July 9, and I'm very excited about it, in that nervous "wow I really hope this works out!" kind of way that I get when I'm starting a new job ;)

Congratulations! I hope you get a kick out of being in the mad scientists' club.

You should talk to [livejournal.com profile] sylfae about it, since she used to work at JHU.

I'm going to start out doing similar things to what I was doing at Battelle: generating maps with stuff plotted on them, hopefully in some way that's useful to someone trying to determine the odds that we're looking at a flu--or something more serious--outbreak early on so they can take steps to help keep it from becoming epidemic. Very much staying with the Java and Web Development genre, at least for getting started. We'll see where things go from there--they mentioned lots of different directions that things could go in.

ho-ly-crap! that is awesome!!! does this mean you get to do all the crazy interesting experiments you want now??/

~laugh~ That is a possibility, though I suspect for the most part that I'll be still focusing on the writing code end of things...

Though I have been doing some of those experiments the past day or so. The results have been annoyingly inconclusive, but that's what I get for trying to take shortcuts ^_^

Terrific! Congrats!

Are you going to commute from VA to MD or move?

I'm currently planning to commute until probably mid-August, and then move once our lease here is almost up.

Where are you thinking of moving to?

Right now I'm hoping to find someplace in the Laurel/Columbia/Ellicott City/Catonsville, which would be a nice short commute for work and also hopefully help keep things reasonable for getting to and from Winchester. ^_^
