In Windows it's possible through something called the COM (Common Object Model?) and ActiveX to have programs that you write control other programs. For example, I can write a Java application that can open, modify, and save a Word document in Word (it starts up an instance of Word and then tells it what to do on my behalf).

Is there any similar thing available for the Macintosh equivalents?

Thanks!

off the top of my head... yes.

I'm pretty sure I've used c++ programs to activate unix prompt commands on a mac. off the top of my head I do not know anyway nicer than that to do it, but that indicates to me that it should be possible.

It is likely that you won't find anythign as "nice" as ActiveX... tho I would start checking the apple dev tools documentation.

If you're seriously looking into development on a mac I would suggest finding a Mac-based message board or somthing. You're going to quickly pass my knowledge as you are a professional developer and I just do home-brew stuff.
