So I've managed to rig up my old motherboard outside of the case in a configuration that kids should not try at home, and my system is happily running Windows 2000 again. Perhaps of greater importance and interest, memtest86 tells me that the RAM is all good. Further searching of various messageboards designed to help poor lost souls such as myself has turned up strong evidence that there is something screwy going on with the RAM--either it's not going at the right speed or voltage or something, so it's BIOS tweaking time!
