Okay, I am now officially very excited about the upcoming release of the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. That's the important thing of this entry. Warning: Minor spoilers behind the cut (just stuff you'd find out if you watched the trailers, but there are people out there who don't want to know anything...)

The rest is about me going into way too much analysis of the potential of said movie and my philosophy of movies-based-on-books.

Normally when a movie based on one of my favorite books comes out I am filled with ambivalence at best and sheer dread at worst. When I first heard that they were making a movie out of H2G2, it was a little bit of excitement tinged with much apprehension. It is one of my favorite books ever, up there with Heinlein's work, and so it has huge potential for me, but that's a double-edged sword. If it is stellar then it will rock my world, but even if it is mediocre it will be a tremendous disappointment to me because of how awesome it could have been. Hence the apprehension.

Then I saw the first teaser, and I got a little more hopeful. I've heard some people saying that they're not that fond of the way it was put together, but for me it was like the writers deployed a little brain scanner so they could custom fit it to my taste: the whole Don't-Panic-in-large-friendly-letters bit is one of my favorite little flourishes throughout the series, so I was much more excited than I had any right to be when I saw it play such a prominent role in the teaser ;)

I just visited the site and saw some of the newer trailers that they've released, and, wow, I am pumped. While several aspects are not quite the way I had imagined them, overall I think that I'll be able to deal with that. Plus the cast looks awesome! The male porn stand-in from Love Actually as Arthur Dent, Left Ear from The Italian Job as Ford Prefect, and Alan Rickman as Marvin the Paranoid Android (you know the one--brain the size of a planet, horrible shooting pain through all the diodes down his left side, seething hatred toward automatic doors...) all make me think that this movie is going to be good. Plus the trailers look good--as I mentioned before, not quite what I had imagined (one of the downsides of my parents giving me a huge version complete with vibrant full-page color pictures for Christmas several years ago ;) but it looks like there's a good chance that they've managed to capture the essence, and that's what really matters to me.

*clutching towel* I can't wait!!!
