I'm looking at getting a jointer for woodworking, since it's kind of critical that you have flat pieces of wood to work with and doing it by hand can be very time consuming (especially for larger projects). The two main ones I am considering are this one by Delta and this one by Jet. If you have experience with either of these (or general considerations that I should keep in mind) please let me know. I'm currently leaning slightly more towards the Delta because it is cheaper, has a bigger discount, and has more reviews, but I haven't yet made up my mind.

The other thing that I am curious about (though this would be pending the okay of the housemates as well) is whether anyone else out there would be interested in using it if I were to get it. I imagine it would get a fair amount of use just from me, but I'm also kind of having ideas of a woodworking night (or day) or something on a fairly regular basis--especially as I continue to get more of the shop set up--where folks could come by and collaborate on projects and such. To come back to the point, if there's interest on other peoples' part then I'd definitely want to go with something this size :)

I have no problem with the acquisition & use by multiple folks. I think the garage would be the best place for it...and with the counters that are down there you'd have some good storage space. We just need to figure out a way to rearrange the area :)

Awesome! ^_^ I'll try to do some rough sketches of possible layouts and see whether it seems reasonable (it looks good in my head, but I suppose taking a few measurements and at least checking it on paper would be a good idea ;)

That particular piece of equipment, not so much. My woodworking imagination at this point tends towards turning fiber tools... er, except for the inkle loom I'd really like to have but haven't managed to find for sale lately.. but realistically, I shouldn't.

*angel on my shoulder* You really don't have time for another hobby, really you don't.
*demon on my other shoulder* It's not another hobby if you're making equipment for a hobby that's already established.

My shoulder devil was saying something similar. All this, just to build a swift! (and shoji screens, and lanterns, and a lucet, and some sort of thing to hold chainmail in order to make working on it easier, and book holders/music stands, and mechanical toys, and a science experiment, and chests...)

Are you also going to get a planer?

Are you getting this to face boards? Or "just" trim the edges so you butt them?

If the second, how about a decent router table?

I'd love to get into woodworking (where did you take that class?), but (as you know) I have limited space, so would enjoy someone having a "Woodworking night"

Yes, I'll probably be getting one of those in the near future (i.e. once I get the jointer) as well because of the answer to your second question, which is yes; the primary reason for my wanting both is to face boards. ^_^

I took the class at Springfield Woodcraft, and I'll be sure to let you know if I'm able to get something organized :)

Class schedule

Did you take the "Beginning & Beyond Woodworking"?

And why on earth did they schedule a class for Superbowl Sunday? Were they not thinking?

If I recall correctly, I took the Woodworking Fundamentals class (see page 2 of the class schedule). I did the 4-evenings one, which worked well because there's so much information that having it broken up like that made it a little easier for me to absorb it.

You might consider tossing a note directly to [livejournal.com profile] achaosofkittens since you saw his stuff and he doesn't read your LJ if you want to talk tools. He might have some insight on what is good and bad quality of tools - I've heard him rant about that often enough with the lathe.
