[livejournal.com profile] elkor recently posted a rant about chain mail/e-mail (I'm sure you've seen the kind that I'm talking about; it usually contains an injunction to forward it to X people or A Bad Thing will happen to you). I'm inclined to agree with him, and think people should be more conscious of that sort of thing, so I'm posting linkage here--you can read about it here in his journal ^_^

Frankly, these messages are bad enough without the Bad Thing part. I rely on e-mail for my business, and to keep up with friends. I can delete spam from people I don't know fairly easily. However, when I get a bunch of "inspiring" or "cute" or "warning" chain mails from friends, it clogs up my mailbox with e-mails I'm reluctant to delete without at least checking, and then I risk overlooking ones I really want to read.

If someone sends a message about something they thought might interest just me, I'm happy to read it. But if they think it might interest their entire friends' list, they are wrong on at least one count, because I don't want to read it.

~nods~ Something tells me that you'd appreciate the song Virus Alert by Weird Al. I know I certainly do...

That's one of the reasons that I use seperate e-mail accounts for different "facets" of my life.

They can all be managed through a single client, but it makes them easier to filter into "work" "friends" "Scene", etc.

So do I. Unfortunately, I have not yet persuaded those of my friends inclined to send endless forwards to send to a specific e-mail address (preferably noone@nowhere.com). ;-)
